38th World Affairs Institute for Student Leaders: The New Administration - Foreign Policy Challenges

November 11, 2008

9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

David L. Lawrence Convention Center

The World Affairs Institute is an annual daylong conference held in cooperation with Rotary International.

Foreign policy isn’t made in a vacuum. It is a product of shifting priorities, influences, and circumstances, which a new Administration may have little ability to control.

We do know that the next president will have to contend with a rapidly changing global environment where...

Everything is connected. It is a “flat” world — pursuing a course of action on one issue often has far - reaching consequences at home and abroad. Global issues also shape domestic policy choices.
The distinction between foreign and domestic matters has blurred.

He won’t get to set the agenda. Nearly every newly elected U.S. president has faced an unanticipated foreign policy crisis during his first year in office. Campaign positions created in the abstract give way to complex choices in the real world.

What is the objective of the Institute?
To expose high school student leaders to world affairs of great importance to the future of the United States, thus preparing them to live and work in a globalized world.

Who can attend the Institute?
High school students are selected by local Rotary Clubs (Districts 7280, 7300, and 7330) in cooperation with schools. Each Rotary Club determines the number of scholarships available.

How many Student Delegates will attend?
Approximately 350 high school juniors and seniors.

How is the conference structured?
Through panel presentations and small breakout groups, experts will discuss key issues with Student Delegates. Each student will receive a comprehensive
background paper prior to the Institute.

Who pays for the scholarships?
Each Rotary Club pays for the number of scholarships it is sponsoring. The fee of $75 for each Delegate will cover the cost of registration, educational materials, all conference sessions, luncheon, and refreshments.
