World Affairs Council Internship Program

The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh welcomes — and relies upon — the efforts of qualified, capable interns!  If you are interested in working with us, please read on!

We accept a limited number of interns during the Fall and Spring semesters and over the Summer.  While the Council believes that internships should provide meaningful experience for participants, these are unpaid opportunities.  However, where applicable, the Council will work with your school to provide school credit.

In addition, though we appreciate that students have outside commitments — school, part-time work, etc. — the Council requires a minimum weekly commitment of 10 hours for Fall and Spring semester internships and a minimum weekly commitment of 20 hours for Summer internships.  Further, the Council is more than happy to accommodate flexible schedules so that students can meet outside obligations.  However, we do require interns to provide a reliable schedule which permits Council staff to know when interns will and will not be in the office.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, but we strongly recommend that you apply according to the following deadlines.

  • Spring Internships: December 1, 2010

Interns often take on individual projects that complement the work of the development, education, or community relations teams. Previous intern projects include: researching and compiling background materials for school outreach programs; research and writing grant requests; researching questions for and otherwise assisting in the preparation for our annual Community WorldQuest competition; creating social media and e-technology sites; and updating and preparing resource materials for students and teachers.

When assigning specific tasks, we consider each intern's background and interests, and, as an organization, we feel strongly that Council internships should provide substantive, meaningful experience.  Thus, interns are welcomed and encouraged to attend Council programs before, during and after the completion of the internship.

Naz El-Khatib, a Pittsburgh native, is a North Allegheny Class of 2008 graduate and a rising sophomore at Yale University, where he plans to major in political science.

If you would like to apply to work with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, please prepare the following materials.  A complete application includes the following and should be sent to Allyce Pinchback, Education Program Manager, at allyce@worldaffairspittsburgh.org.

  • A cover letter which includes your goals for the internship and clearly delineates which specific areas of the Council’s work most interest you.  In addition, this letter should include your dates of availability as well as the hours and days of the week in which you would prefer to work at the Council.
  • An updated resume or CV.
  •  2-3 page writing sample.  Feel free to provide a short selection from a larger work but please include context materials where needed.
  • An unofficial transcript or list of coursework

Finally, all applicants should be prepared for a formal interview.  Recognizing that many potential interns are in school, we are happy to conduct phone interviews but prefer in-person interviews whenever feasible.

We appreciate your interest and look forward to welcoming you to the Council!  If you have any questions or require more information, please contact Allyce Pinchback, Education Program Manager at 412.224.4092 or via email at allyce@worldaffairspittsburgh.org.
